01-12-09 | Local Business Owners Can Learn New Laws For 2009

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Business owners can learn about the new legal issues affecting employers in 2009, when Karen L. Gabler, Esq., a partner in the Employment Law Group of Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton LLP, Ventura County’s largest law firm, and 2008 Chair of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce Board, will present the annual employment law update at a Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Development Luncheon. This event is Jan. 21, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Lost Canyons Golf Club, 3301 Los Canyons Drive, Simi Valley.

“It is essential for employers to stay on top of all the new employment laws and decisions each year,” Gabler said. “This update is a quick way to ensure that you are in compliance with California’s latest employment laws to protect your business and avoid employee claims.”

Topics covered in Gabler’s update will include changes to FMLA, the impact of the California Supreme Court’s review of Brinker, amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, travel time pay and other essential subjects. She will also present legal highlights from the past year that may alter the way employers do business.

Gabler concentrates her practice in the representation of management clients in all aspects of employment advice and litigation. She conducts workplace audits and training for managers and employees in employment policies and practices such as wage and hour issues, leaves of absence, harassment, hiring and firing, disabilities and employee discipline.

Gabler has served as an adjunct professor of employment law at the Pepperdine University School of Law. She was the 2008 chair of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce and is the 2009 chair of the Simi Valley Community Foundation. She is a member of the board of directors of United Way of Ventura County, the Western Ventura County Employer Advisory Council and the Simi Valley Hospital Foundation, and a past board member of the East Ventura County Employer Advisory Council, the Simi Valley Education Foundation, and The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. She has received several awards for her professional and community contributions. She earned her law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii, where she was managing editor and contributing author for the University of Hawaii Law Review.
