On Thursday, January 28, the United Way’s Young Leaders Society of Ventura County held its annual Post Holiday Mixer at the Watermark on Main. The annual event held since 2008, was created as a means to engage YLS Board Members with other young professionals in an atmosphere that highlighted the impact the Young Leaders Society has made in providing career and life mentoring, educational scholarships and volunteer service engagement to high school and community college students.
YLS Chairman Timur Taluy, started the festivities by introducing members of the Young Leaders Society's Board of Directors and special guests which included United Way President & CEO David Smith, Health Care Agency Director Mike Powers, Segue’s Jerry Beckerman and Candidate for Ventura County Sherriff Geoffrey Dean.
Taluy, a small business owner of FileYourTaxes.com, Chair of YLS and a United Way Board Member said, “A group of young professionals came together in 2005 to find a way to engage young people into United Way’s work to advance the common good. For the past several years, these committed young leaders have worked hard to create innovative opportunities that empower of youth.”
YLS Board members Chris Kunke of Nordman Cormany Hair & Compton spoke about the annual Youth Empowerment Summit while David Perez, of Pacifica Hotel Management Company introduced the newest YLS childhood literacy project called Books Bonanza.
Ceal Potts, a founding member of YLS led the evening festivities which culminated in fundraising more than $11,000 for educational scholarships which will be distributed to high school and community college students who complete the Youth Empowerment program held April through June.
Abiel Acosta, a Private Wealth Advisor of Lincoln Financial expressed, “I have heard about some of the activities of the Young Leaders Society through Facebook and wanted to know how I can help. I look forward to participating as a career & life mentor and share my career experience as a financial advisor with high school students.”
