Professional Experience

John Andersen counsels and represents individuals and families in all aspects of estate planning, with an emphasis on providing custom, yet efficient, solutions tailored to the individual needs of each client. John is a certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law and is Chair of the firm’s Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Law Group. His practice includes:

Estate Planning:
Assisting individuals, couples and registered domestic partners with planning, drafting and implementation of revocable trusts, wills, durable powers of attorney, advance health care directives and related documents. John advises clients on options to avoid the need for court-supervised probates or conservatorships and to minimize the impact of estate taxes. He also counsels parents on appointing guardians and trustees for minor children and the creation of trusts for adult children to provide asset protection in the event of divorce, bankruptcy or legal judgment.

Sophisticated Wealth Transfer and Business Succession Planning:
Advising business or property owners, investors and other high net worth individuals on sophisticated planning strategies designed to minimize gift and estate taxes and preserve and protect business and other family assets for future generations. This often involves creation or reorganization of one or more limited liability companies, family limited partnerships or closely-held corporations to hold and manage family business and investment assets, as well as preparation of multi-generation "dynasty trusts" and structuring gifts or sales of family business interests to intentionally defective grantor trusts (IDGTs).

Family and Charitable Gift Planning:
Advising clients on tax efficient methods of making lifetime gifts to children, grandchildren or others, including preparation of qualified personal residence trusts (QPRTs), irrevocable Crummey trusts or 2503(c)(3) trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs) and irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs). John also assists clients with making substantial gifts to charity, including establishment of private foundations and creation of charitable remainder trusts.

Probate and Trust Administration:
Representing clients in all aspects of probate and trust administration, including assisting executors, administrators and trustees in fulfilling their legal and administrative obligations. John also counsels beneficiaries regarding their interests in trusts or estates. John prepares federal gift and estate tax returns and represents taxpayers in estate tax audits and appeals before the Internal Revenue Service.

John is a frequent speaker on estate planning topics. He is admitted to the State Bars of California and Washington and is authorized to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.

Community

John is an active member of various professional and community organizations, including the Trusts and Estates Sections of the California State Bar and the Ventura County Bar Association.

John received his legal education from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (J.D. 1992), where he served as Associate Executive Editor of the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal. John received his undergraduate degree in history from UCLA in 1986.
